American Teacher April 2003--Roundup
AFT'S NEW CHINA RESOURCE GUIDE What is the international community doing to help put an end to workers' rights violations in China? Why should Americans be concerned about the struggle for democracy and human rights in China? These and other questions are addressed in a new resource guide on China produced by the AFT's international affairs department. The guide, "China: The Struggle for Democracy and Freedom," is part of the AFT's ongoing efforts to provide materials that help educate students about current issues around the world. It includes columns by AFT president Sandra Feldman and articles on child labor and education issues in China. "International pressure is critical" to bringing democracy to China and ending the government's violations of human and workers' rights, Feldman writes in an introduction to the guide. "Left alone, the Chinese government will continue to clamp down on its citizens' rights and freedoms. Those who support democracy and freedom must make their voices heard." Single copies of the resource guide are available to AFT members for a $5 postage and handling charge. Write to the AFT International Affairs Department at 555 New Jersey Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20001 or send an e-mail to iad@aft.org.
CELEBRATE OUR SCHOOL NURSES Make plans to recognize your school's nurse during National School Nurse Day on May 7. The day is designed to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting. This year's celebration will, for the first time, take place during National Nurses Week, May 6-12, and will again recognize the vital role that school nurses play in improving the health and well-being of our nation's children. Oct. 1, 2002, marked the official beginning of a year-long celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of school nursing in America. To learn more about celebrating National School Nurse Day, visit the National Association of School Nurses Web site at www.nasn.org.
