American Teacher April 2002--Where To Find It
CYBER CITIZENSHIP CyberSmart is a new, free curriculum designed to help students, parents and teachers work together to boost security on the Internet. The curriculum, co-published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, is nonsequential to allow for flexible implementation by technology teachers, librarians, media specialists and classroom teachers. It includes 65 standards-based lesson plans, student activity sheets, and other materials promoting the responsible and effective use of a school's technology investment. Addressed are such issues as safety, manners and advertising. For more details, visit www.cybersmart.org.
POETRY MONTH April is National Poetry Month, and organizers of the event this year will focus on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Langston Hughes. The poet will be the sole focus of the National Poetry Month 2002 poster and national advertising campaign. Additionally, new features devoted to this influential artist will be added to the American Academy of Poets Web site. Included will be several readings of Hughes' poems, broadcast live via the Web. For details, visit the National Academy of Poets online at www.poets.org and click on "Langston Hughes Centenary Exhibit." ROCKET CHALLENGE The National Association of Rocketry and the Aerospace Industries Association are co-sponsoring the "Team America Rocketry Challenge," a rocketry design challenge for U.S. high school student teams as part of the Centennial of Manned Flight celebration in 2003. The challenge involves designing, building and flying a multi-stage model rocket that carries two raw eggs and an electronic altimeter as close as possible to exactly 1,500 feet at a "fly-off" competition to be held in Northern Virginia in April 2003. There is an entry fee of $160. For complete rules and details, visit www.aia-aerospace.org. GO FIGURE The award-winning "Figure This!" Web site www.figurethis.org offers engaging mathematical challenges designed to pique the curiosity of students. The site features math resources for middle school students and their parents, teachers and communities. Its central feature is a collection of math challenges (available in both Spanish and English) that tap a range of mathematical concepts. For teachers, the Figure This! site features a Math Index that categorizes each challenge by the mathematical topics it addresses. All online materials can be downloaded for free and reprinted for distribution. Copies of the family materials and the Spanish language booklets are also available by calling 877/GO-SOLVE. TEACHER INPUT The free match and science assessment and learning Web site www.getsmarter.org, which was featured in the March issue of American Teacher, needs help from teachers. The site's "Info for Teachers" section needs teacher input in the following areas: How can the site be incorporated into the classroom? How can it be used as a professional development tool? What other resources (Web links) are there out there that teachers rely upon? What are the lesson(s) to be learned from TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study)? Educators who wish to lend their expertise should contact Kim West at getsmarter@compete.org.
