American Teacher April 2002--Try It
QUICK SUMMARY To wrap up a lesson, project or the week, use the
last five minutes of class to ask students to raise their hands and talk
about one thing they learned, suggests high school English teacher Tracy
Hayes of Los Angeles. Call on the students, and after each appropriate
answer, mark one point or extra credit next to that student's
name in the roll book. CLUTTER CONTROL Minimize clutter on one-piece desks by laminating
a folder and securing it to the side of the desk near the seat, suggests
elementary school teacher Denise Ward of Elizabethton, Tenn. All papers go
into this folder; all books go underneath the seat. The result is a neater
desk and an easy way to make sure any papers that need to be taken home aren't
left in the folder. PICK A STICK Melissa Castellano of New Rochelle, N.Y., writes each child's name on one end of an individual craft stick, then places all the sticks, name end down, in a decorated can. This is an easy way to select student names at random to call on, choose partners, organize groups, etc. Submissions for "Try It" should be sent in care of American Teacher, 555 New Jersey Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20001. (Sorry, we cannot acknowledge or return submissions.) We'll pay $40 for each idea that is used.
