"Story"
MUSIC: Spare and poignant track fades up and under announcer.
ANNOUNCER: Fifty years ago, Linda Brown, an African American third-grader, had to walk a long and dangerous route to her school, even though a school for white children was just blocks from her home.
Today, we know that little girl’s name because she and her family were among the courageous individuals who challenged legal segregation. The result was Brown versus Board of Education, the Supreme Court’s 1954 ruling to desegregate public schools.
SFX: Fade up and under SFX of a busy high school class.
TEACHER: I’m Leslye Clemons-Carr – a high school teacher in Philadelphia.
Equal access to a good education is is still not the reality for many children in school districts like mine. And without equal opportunity, resources and support, poor and minority children can fall further behind.
ANNOUNCER: It’s long past time to fulfill the promise of Brown versus Board (pause) by ensuring that all our children are given an equal opportunity for a strong public education.. That’s the only acceptable legacy of this landmark decision.
Voice-over: A message from the American Federation of Teachers.
