"CHIP"

DOCTOR: OK, Alicia, open wide and say Aaah…

ALICIA: A-a-h

DOCTOR: That’s it!

FELDMAN: Good health care can make a big difference in a child’s ability to learn.  Yet, nine million children in our country don’t have health insurance – and as a result, many don’t get medical care when they need it.

I’m Sandra Feldman, President of the American Federation of Teachers, the AFT.

As states struggle to balance their budgets, even vital programs like “CHIP,” the successful Children’s Health Insurance Program, have been slashed.  Already, 34 states have cut their health insurance programs, and as a result, some half-a-million children have lost their lifeline to health care.

We know that children who are insured are more likely to be healthy – and children who are healthy do better in school.

So, let’s make sure Congress and the president work with states to restore and expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program.  Children’s health – and learning – depend on it.
