"Redesigning Low-Performing Schools"

Struggling schools can be turned around... Six years ago, the American Federation of Teachers began a project to do just that.

Feldman: I'm Sandra Feldman, President of the American Federation of Teachers, the AFT.

Our project, called Redesigning Schools to Raise Achievement, brings together teachers' unions, parents, and school and community partners. Together, we're putting into practice high standards for academics and behavior, proven education programs, and extra learning time for students who need it.

Professional development for teachers is also a critical element -- because every child deserves a well prepared and supported teacher.

The good news is, it's working across the country. For example, in Baltimore, Maryland, for example, test scores have soared at ten formerly low achieving schools.

With extra help, we're proving that troubled schools can be turned around.
