Statement by Randi Weingarten,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
on President Obama's Speech to Congress and the Nation

WASHINGTON—President Obama gave the nation a frank and honest assessment of the struggles facing our country, while reminding us of the optimism and determination that have been so much a part of our nation's successes.

President Obama provided a road map to recovery based on shared responsibility and a commitment to smart long-term investments. The investments that he proposes in education, healthcare and the other foundations of strong communities are essential to securing our nation's stability and vitality.

The AFT applauds the president for his leadership in and commitment to strengthening the critical services upon which so many depend. We look forward to being active partners in achieving this goal.
