Statement by Randi Weingarten,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On President Obama's Signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

WASHINGTON—The American Federation of Teachers applauds and thanks President Obama for his strong and steadfast commitment to our nation's children and workers, as evidenced by his signing today of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

This package represents a reinvestment in America, its workers and their families. The bill's unprecedented investment in education and other vital public services recognizes the role they play in our country's health and stability. This economic recovery bill will help prevent draconian cuts to public services, preclude layoffs in schools, and provide teachers and their students the tools and supports needed to help them succeed. This bill marks an important turning point as our nation works to lift itself out of its present economic crisis.
