Statement by Randi Weingarten,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On Success of Chicago Teacher Advancement Program
Chicago Teacher Advancement Program, or Chicago TAP, is a comprehensive school improvement program that recognizes the contributions made by all school staff toward a student’s learning. Chicago’s program was developed collaboratively by the school district’s partners—the Chicago Public Education Fund, Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, the Chicago Teachers Union, the Broad Foundation and the Joyce Foundation. Chicago TAP offers opportunities for job-embedded professional development, career advancement and performance-based incentives.
WASHINGTON – Chicago TAP is a comprehensive program that combines all the elements necessary to support and develop teachers with the ultimate goal of sustained student achievement. The beauty of the Chicago TAP program is that it combines mentoring, evaluation, strong training programs, teamwork and school-wide financial incentives to boost the quality of teaching and improve student achievement. The first year of Chicago’s program looks promising, and we’re looking forward to its continued progress.
