Statement by Edward J. McElroy,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On Hillary Clinton's Wins in Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Voters across the country yesterday showed that they recognize Hillary Clinton has the strength and experience to lead our nation. AFT members and other voters in Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas responded enthusiastically to Clinton because they know she is ready to turn the economy around, expand access to healthcare and improve America's standing in the world.

AFT members have helped provide the crucial edge for Clinton in several states, and we will continue to mobilize members in the remaining states on Clinton's behalf. The AFT's member-to-member outreach program includes mailings, phone banking and canvassing to educate members about the issues and encourage them to support Clinton.

The 42-member AFT executive council voted to endorse Clinton in October 2007, after a deliberative seven-month process that solicited members' issues of concern and asked which candidate they believed would best address those concerns. In the end, our members determined that Hillary Clinton is the strongest leader, and we believe the depth of her experience will serve Americans well.
