Statement by Edward J. McElroy, President, American Federation of Teachers,
On 'MetLife's Survey of the American Teacher: The Homework Experience'
MetLife today released a report that examines the value of homework for students and the link between homework and a quality education
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The MetLife survey reminds us that a quality education is about more than test scores. Parents, teachers and students agree that homework is an important part of helping children improve academic performance.
Curriculum-based homework reinforces what is being taught in the classroom and helps raise student performance. As the report notes, lower-achieving students spend less time on homework than their higher-achieving counterparts. A range of components, including relevant homework assignments, is needed to give students an effective education.
We thank MetLife for once again releasing a report that highlights one of the many issues facing the teaching profession.
