Statement from AFT President Edward J. McElroy
On National Economic Stimulus Proposal
WASHINGTON, DC—Our nation faces a $100 billion backlog in school repairs, and yet President Bush and Congress are considering an economic stimulus package that ignores this and other vital needs. The American Federation of Teachers urges Congress to restructure this proposal to add truly substantive investments, including unemployment insurance extensions, increased support for the Food Stamp Program and increased aid to states facing ever-mounting Medicaid costs.
