Statement by Edward J. McElroy, President,
American Federation of Teachers
Hillary Clinton, whom the AFT endorsed for the Democratic nomination,
won the Nevada presidential caucuses today.
WASHINGTON, D.C.—It is no surprise that voters chose Hillary Clinton today in Nevada, a state where union members make up a large percentage of the electorate. With her Nevada win and her victory in New Hampshire earlier this month, the message is clear: Labor will turn out in force for a candidate so highly qualified to be the next president of the United States.
The AFT's active and retired members worked tirelessly in Nevada to educate fellow members about the caucuses and encourage them to support Clinton. In the coming days and months, we will continue to mobilize AFT members on her behalf in elections across the country.
The 41-member AFT executive council voted to endorse Clinton in October 2007, after a deliberative seven-month process that solicited members' issues of concern and asked which candidate they believed would best address those concerns. In the end, our members and leaders determined that Hillary Clinton is the strongest leader, and we believe the depth of her experience will serve Americans well.
