Statement from Edward J. McElroy, President,
American Federation of Teachers
on the Democratic Leadership’s Role in the Reauthorization of the College
Opportunity and Affordability Act
WASHINGTON, D.C.— The American Federation of Teachers applauds Chairman George Miller and the Democratic leadership of the House Education and Labor Committee for today advancing legislation that breaks down financial barriers to college for our neediest students. The College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007 expands access to higher education for qualified students by raising Pell Grants, an issue of great concern for America’s working families. The act also extends loan forgiveness to professionals in critical fields such as early childhood education and nursing, and protects the core principals of academic freedom that are essential to ensuring the quality and vitality of our higher education system.
We commend Rep. Miller and his Democratic colleagues for standing firm against attempts to weaken this law. We look forward to working with the Congress to continue to strengthen this legislation.
