Statement by Edward J. McElroy, President, American Federation of Teachers,
on Contract Negotiations Between the FAA and NATCA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) stands firmly with its union brothers and sisters in the National Air Traffic Controllers Association as they work to secure a fair contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In particular, the AFT strongly condemns the FAA's misleading and divisive tactic of comparing the salaries of air traffic controllers with those of firefighters, police officers, teachers and nurses—a ruse cynically used by FAA Administrator Marion Blakey to undercut the air traffic controllers.

The AFT proudly represents hundreds of thousands of teachers and nurses. Both professions provide vital services that are essential to the strength and health of our nation. However, it is disingenuous to compare teachers or nurses to air traffic controllers. It's comparing apples to oranges, and reflects the FAA's eagerness to pursue a "divide and conquer" strategy. Fortunately for all of us who depend on safe skies, America's workers recognize the importance of unity, and they will not fall for such a transparent ploy.

The AFT is deeply grateful for the work of America's air traffic controllers—men and women whose dedication, expertise and long hours help provide the safest air traffic control system in the world.  We are concerned, however, that the FAA seems more intent on cutting costs than maximizing air passenger safety. Public safety should always be priority one.  A fair contract for air traffic controllers would help realize that goal.
