Nurses United Honored as Missouri’s Top Labor Organization
Washington, D.C. – Missouri Progressive Vote Coalition will name Nurses United as the 2004 "Outstanding Labor Organization" at a dinner on Sept. 11 in St. Louis. Nurses United was nominated for the honor by the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus.
Nurses United was founded in 1999 when nurses from the 12-hospital Health Midwest system decided a union was the only way to have a voice in the hospitals’ patient care conditions.
"While still a new union, Nurses United already is a force to be reckoned with as a leader for employee rights and improved patient care. Its efforts on behalf of nurses and patients, especially in the face of constant anti-union obstacles, should be an inspiration to all working men and women in Missouri and across the country," said Edward J. McElroy, president of the American Federation of Teachers. Nurses United is an affiliate of AFT Healthcare.
Nurses United represents nurses at three of the 12 HCA Midwest hospitals. (HCA bought the Health Midwest system in 2003.)
