Statement by Edward J. McElroy,
Secretary-Treasurer, American Federation of Teachers
on Public Service Recognition Week
Washington, D.C. — In the face of historic budget cuts and drastic reductions in services, public employees have soldiered admirably to meet public demand, and protect natural resources. Although there has been some respite in state and local government fiscal crises, the cuts and hardships continue. Unless our elected leaders take responsibility for providing the support for our public services, these essential services face irreparable harm.
Every day, but particularly during this Public Service Recognition Week, public employees at all levels of government should be commended for their often unheralded, behind-the-scenes work that makes such a difference in our lives. The strength of our nation and our communities is a tribute to the public employees who deliver necessary government services to us all.
