 Statement by Sandra Feldman
President, American Federation of Teachers
on the Bush Administration's Proposal to Cut Support for Student Loans

The Administration's proposal to cut government support for student loans is shortsighted. It would limit access to college and add to the financial burden of college students from working families.

Even with the consolidation program currently in place, many college graduates struggle to pay off enormous student loans. Young college graduates shouldn't have to mortgage their futures to pay for their education.

Our continued focus needs to be on making access to quality higher education a national priority - and that means we must not create additional barriers for working families who are struggling to send their children to college.
