'A Milestone in Efforts to Secure a Voice for All UIC Faculty'
WASHINGTON—Today, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten applauded the leaders and members of UIC United Faculty as it was officially certified as the exclusive bargaining representative for full-time tenure-track faculty and full-time nontenure-track faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
"This action by the Illinois Labor Relations Board is a milestone in the efforts to secure a voice for all UIC faculty in decisions on how to achieve the university's multifaceted mission of high-quality teaching, research and service to the community and state. The ability for faculty to have a voice through collective bargaining is the best way to strengthen the university and ensure that its students receive the highest-quality education now and in the future.
"The AFT is proud to count UIC faculty as our members. This win is the result of the hard work and determination of both tenure-track and nontenure-track faculty to create one union, which now will negotiate contracts for the two coordinated bargaining units. And this success in Chicago shows the strength of our ongoing partnership with the American Association of University Professors. This is the second time faculty at a major research university have won official bargaining certification since the AFT and AAUP established a formal organizing agreement."
