WASHINGTON— As the world celebrates the publication of Malala Yousafzai's autobiography and notes the one-year anniversary of the attempt on her life because she advocates for girls' education, Share My Lesson—AFT's digital collection of teaching resources—has posted a lesson plan for taking Malala's campaign for girls' education into the classroom with instructional materials that are aligned to Common Care standards. Share My Lesson is the nation's largest and online collection of free lesson plans, videos, tips and other resources for educators and parents.
"Share My Lesson provides teachers with a Common Core-ready lesson that takes Malala Yousafzai's courageous advocacy for girls' education to classrooms. U.S. students will learn how they can help Malala in her fight to make access to a free public education for girls as well as boys—something we take for granted in the Western world—a reality throughout the world," said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
Malala is the 16-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl and education activist who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. She has recovered and is living in Great Britain. Share My Lesson's Malala-centered lesson, targeted for grades 5-10, is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and is designed to teach students about human rights. It includes video of her speech at the United Nations earlier this year as well as other video materials, the petition that supports her campaign and other materials.
The AFT also will be marking the U.N.-declared Day of the Girl on Oct. 11, intended to reverse the devaluation of girls around the world and attempt to improve their lives and provide opportunities to reach their full potential.
Share My Lesson has more than 268,000 free resources, thousands of which are aligned to the Common Core standards.
