WASHINGTON— Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on Senate Republicans blocking critical legislation offering immediate relief to millions of American students and families saddled with exorbitantly high student loan interest.
"It's unconscionable that, as students and families continue to struggle under a mountain of student loan debt, Republicans in the Senate chose to side with billionaires and big banks over working families by blocking the mere discussion of Sen. Elizabeth Warren's bill providing real relief to millions of Americans.
"This issue deserves more than a partisan response. Allowing students and families to refinance their student loan debt should not be a partisan issue; it's the right thing to do. We will continue to fight alongside Sen. Warren and others, including the courageous few Republicans who stood today with students and families, to chip away at this mountain of debt and reclaim the promise of higher education as a pathway to opportunity and success.
"We will continue to fight on behalf of Americans like Rob Geremia, a Washington, D.C., teacher who has committed his life to public service and to helping our children but is knee-deep in student loan debt and unable to refinance his loans. Saddled with debt like millions of other Americans, Rob has delayed making important life choices and worries about how his students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, will be able to afford college and achieve their dreams."
