Washington—AFT President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on the immigration reform bill introduced by Sens. Richard Durbin, Charles Schumer, Robert Menendez, Michael Bennet, John McCain, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake.

"Now is the time for commonsense, comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform that lives up to our values as a nation of immigrants. Meaningful reform must bring 11 million aspiring Americans, students and families out of the shadows and provide them with a meaningful path toward citizenship. DREAMers, students who have worked hard and followed the rules, must be given the life-changing opportunity to attend college and further contribute to their communities without constant fear and uncertainty for themselves and their families. And we must strengthen our economy while protecting workers from exploitation.

"While this bill is not perfect, it offers a beginning to work from. We look forward to working with the Senate to strengthen and improve the bill as it moves forward so we can seize this unique opportunity to create lasting and meaningful reform. We are a nation enriched by its immigrants, and Americans know that our strength has always been built on the fundamental idea that America is a place where many become one. We thank this group of senators for listening to the overwhelming support among Americans for reform and responding to the need for action."
