Washington—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on the decision to omit the proposed ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines from the gun violence prevention legislation moving through the Senate.
"Assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines have no place in a civilized society. Their sole purpose is to inflict mass carnage. Getting these weapons off our streets and out of the hands of murderers would go a long way toward making our communities safer and preventing horrible atrocities like we saw at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"In the wake of the recent murder of 26 innocent children and educators at Sandy Hook, we are deeply disappointed that Sen. Feinstein's proposals will not be included in the emerging legislative package of commonsense gun safety bills soon to be considered in the Senate. Of course, we will support this package. But we also will not abandon our commitment to see Congress pass the proposed ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The safety of our children and communities necessitates no less."
