Collaboration, Not Confrontation, Is Essential to Building Strong Public Schools,
Improving Teaching and Learning

 
WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten will join more than 400 educators, administrators, leaders and others this week in Cincinnati to discuss how collaboration between labor and management can transform our public education system and improve teaching and learning. The May 23-24 conference is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the American Federation of Teachers and other education organizations.

"It's collaboration, not confrontation that is essential to building strong public schools and ensuring that teachers have the time, tools and trust they need to improve teaching and learning," said Weingarten. "School districts across the country are demonstrating that when adults engage in the hard work of working together to solve problems, rather than focusing on winning arguments, our children, our teachers and our communities benefit. Collaboration, with investments in the programs that we know work, will help teachers prepare students for school, college, work and life."

The conference's sponsoring organizations will sign a joint statement laying out the elements of a transformed teaching profession, including an embedded culture of shared responsibility and leadership; high-quality teacher preparation; continuous growth and professional development; evaluations based on multiple measures; competitive compensation; providing the conditions for successful teaching and learning; and engaging with community leaders and groups.

Weingarten and labor-management teams are available for interviews during the conference.
