SEATTLE—In an effort to boost college student attainment and success, the American Federation of Teachers today passed a resolution that calls on policymakers, accrediting agencies and other higher education stakeholders to support policies that reflect the perspective of those who engage with students every day—frontline educators.
“Promoting the success of their students is the overriding mission and day-to-day responsibility of frontline faculty, who bring to their classrooms years of education and experience and, as practicing professionals, have every right to claim primary expertise in matters of curriculum development, teaching and student assessment,” the resolution says.
The AFT considers student success a top priority in its higher education agenda, and will continue to focus the union’s higher education policy initiatives, communications and other activities around the educational needs of students. The AFT also has created a website, WhatShouldCount.org, to provide up-to-date information on the latest developments related to student success and accountability, and to provide a forum for educators to share their expertise and exchange their insights on those issues.
The AFT is holding its biennial convention July 7-11 in Seattle. Coming together under the theme “Building Futures Together,” more than 3,000 delegates have voted on major union policies that address the need to save and strengthen public education, build common cause with communities, and improve the institutions in which our members work.
