The "magic bullet" to cure or prevent HIV infection has not been found, and too many people with or affected by HIV/AIDS are isolated by cultural, geographic, and economic barriers. In these times, how must we fight AIDS and relieve the human suffering it causes? We believe the answer will be found in the transformation of information into knowledge. For that to happen, information must be easily accessible and widely disseminated. It must be used.
To promote this process ÆGiS utilizes a combination of FidoNet® (connecting over 32,000 electronic bulletin boards in 66 countries) and Internet communication tools. In this way, we seek to relieve some of the suffering and isolation caused by HIV/AIDS, and foster the understanding and knowledge that will lead to better care, prevention, and a cure.

International AIDS Economic Network (www.iaen.org/index.htm)
The International AIDS Economic Network (IAEN) provides data, tools and analysis on the economics of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in developing countries for compassionate, cost-effective responses to the global epidemic. The network began in 1993 as an informal group of researchers, policymakers, program administrators and others from development agencies, multilateral institutions, universities and NGOs. Since 1997 the network has championed the use of new information technologies – especially e-mail and the World Wide Web – to link researchers and the HIV/AIDS policy community world wide. Major support has been provided by UNAIDS, the World Bank, and USAID, while additional support has been provided by the European Commission and Merck & Co. Inc.
IAEN activities include:
- Distributing resources and tools
- Hosting face-to-face meetings
- Facilitating online conferences
- Operating the IAEN web site
- Maintaining an online AIDS Economics Library
- Distributing a monthly e-mail newsletter

The Harvard AIDS Institute(www.hsph.harvard.edu/hai/index.html)
The Harvard AIDS Institute is dedicated to conducting and catalyzing research to end the worldwide AIDS epidemic. For more than a decade, the Harvard AIDS Institute has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to accelerating the pace of discovery and conducting vaccine research to end the worldwide epidemic. To reach that goal, the Institute has built the largest HIV and AIDS laboratory in New England, forged one of the most extensive and longest standing AIDS research and training collaborations in Africa, and has developed the first HIV reference laboratory in Botswana dedicated exclusively to investigating the HIV-1C subtype. To further strengthen the efforts under way in Africa, the Institute continues to seek opportunities for meaningful research, such as the Enhancing Care Initiative, a program that strives to improve the care of people living with HIV in Africa and other resource-scarce countries, and the Botswana-Harvard partnership, an HIV research collaboration that conducts mother-to-child transmission studies of HIV among the local population.
