Education Week devotes major coverage in a recent issue to the challenges facing educators as the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread across sub-Saharan Africa. In one of two extensive articles, the paper follows the work of Lucy Barimbui, an AIDS educator whose "job exists because of a partnership between the KNUT, the Kenyan teachers’ union, and the American Federation of Teachers."
In Kenya, 27,000 teachers are expected to die within the next five years as a result of AIDS-related illnesses, and more than 2 million children will lose one or both parents. Education Week notes that the AFT-Africa AIDS Campaign has raised $170,000 from AFT members and "used that money to leverage $3.8 million more from the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief."
