AFT's Weingarten on President Obama's Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order
WASHINGTON—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on President Obama's Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order:
"As members of Congress depart Washington for the summer recess, leaving critical issues of importance to working families unaddressed, President Obama reaffirms his commitment to hardworking Americans today by signing this initiative.
"For far too long, government contractors have profited at the expense of the middle class. Moving forward, employers receiving taxpayer-funded federal contracts will be held accountable for meeting existing labor laws that require safe workplaces and equitable pay for workers.
"Under this order, contractors with poor labor records will no longer enjoy an unfair competitive advantage over more responsible employers who steer clear of workplace violations, offer fair wages and benefits, and treat their employees with the dignity and respect they deserve.
"We know that when companies invest in their workers, productivity and efficiency improve and everyone wins. We will continue to work with the president and members of Congress to ensure that all working people get the respect and dignity they deserve."
