AFT's Weingarten on Teacher Migration Study
Washington—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on Education International's report "Getting Teacher Migration and Mobility Right" and a new Web portal which offers supports and resources for migrant teachers.
"All too often migrant teachers—the majority of whom are female—take extraordinary risks to support their families and advance their careers, and face exploitation and abuse instead of support and advancement.
"We saw that in New Orleans where 350 Filipino teachers were finally able to win a $4.5 million judgment after recruiters forced them to pay exorbitant illegal fees and robbed them of their rights.
"This study, based on the largest survey of migrant teachers, offers a blueprint to ensure that migrant teachers are supported, that their rights are protected, and that they have real value in the lives of the students they teach and their new communities."
