AFT Statement on House Immigration Bill
WASHINGTON—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on House immigration bill:
"This nation is at its best when it reflects its values as a diverse and welcoming home for those who strive, work hard, and seek to make a better life for their families and their communities.
"We have always been a nation enriched by immigrants. From the young people who have never known a home other than the United States to the teachers who want all of their students to have equal opportunities, our strength is built on the fundamental idea that America is a place where many become one.
"The American Federation of Teachers is prepared to work arm in arm with U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia (D-Fla.) and all House members who are committed to advancing legislation passed by the Senate in late June. This legislation will help bring 11 million aspiring Americans, students and families out of the shadows and provide them with a meaningful path toward citizenship. We must reclaim the promise for all who make America home—regardless of who they are or where they were born. The time for the House to act is now."
