Weingarten Protests Iranian Leader's U.N. Address
AFT president Randi Weingarten on Sept. 12 issued a "Statement of Solidarity with the Working Men and Women of Iran" strongly protesting a planned address to the United Nations General Assembly by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. The Iranian dictator is scheduled to speak Sept. 22 at a meeting to commemorate the Durban Declaration on racism. "Any speech before a General Assembly session by a man with so much blood on his hands is an outrage," Weingarten said, "but allowing him to speak at a meeting directly concerned with human rights is an insult to the founding principles of the U.N."
