AFT Healthcare Honored for Nurse Certification Efforts
AFT Healthcare's school nurse subcommittee has been working for several years to achieve recognition of its efforts to promote certification, and those efforts were honored June 29 by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses.
Just as teachers are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, school counselors by the National Board for Certified Counselors, and other professionals by similar certification bodies, school nurses can achieve voluntary certification from the NBCSN. The board is an independent organization established for the purpose of developing and implementing the certification process for school nurses, who earn the title of Nationally Certified School Nurse.
The AFT Healthcare program was honored for highlighting and educating others on the value of the certification.
In 2010, following the AFT national convention in Seattle, the AFT executive council adopted a resolution initiated by the subcommittee that supports the school nurses' certification process. The resolution calls for school nurses to be recognized, rewarded and compensated in the same way as certified teachers, counselors and others, for their ability to demonstrate competence at the mastery level of practice.
