The Mississippi American Federation of Teachers, Paraprofessionals and School-Related Personnel, AFL-CIO, is collecting school supplies for educators and students on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and working to provide direct assistance to members affected by the disaster.

Mississippi AFT president Greg Kelly reports that approximately 1,000 MAFT members, including teachers, staff and school-related personnel, have been directly affected by Hurricane Katrina. About 600 members live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and many have lost their homes and community schools.

The Jackson Federation of Teachers kicked off the fundraising effort with an initial $3,500 donation to the effort to help members affected by the hurricane. Bergie Jones, president of the Jackson Federation of Teachers/Paraprofessionals and School-Related Personnel (JFT/PSRP), announced that her local's executive board made a unanimous decision to offer support to coastal members who experienced damage and loss. In previous years, JFT/PSRP has recognized local members for their service and dedication with a token of appreciation during American Education Week. "This year our members will forego this gift and extend aid to our brothers and sisters who suffered the ravages of this horrific storm," said Jones.

Donations of schools supplies may be sent to the Mississippi AFT-Jackson office, 931 Hwy. 80 West, Suite 2A-1, Jackson, MS 39204.
