A lifelong activist

Mary Reid
Mary Reid is a lifelong activist who retired from her work as a youth supervisor nearly 17 years ago; she remains connected to the union and her community, however, because she wants to continue to make a difference. “My goal is to make a change in the quality of life of all our citizens, especially the elderly,” says Reid, who is president of the New York State Public Employees Federation retiree chapter in her region. She also is dedicated to the revitalization of her community. “Bay Shore has been my hometown since 1947, and I support many of the groups that benefit the community as a whole.” Volunteering in the community gives Reid an outlet for building relationships with people. They are kinds of connections with people that keep her motivated to remain active. “You have to be around other people. Getting to know people, and allowing them to get to know you, is the best part of being involved.”
