American AcademicAmerican Academic: The State of the Higher Education Workforce 1997-2007 (pdf, 2.0 MB)
Using the most recent ten years of federal data, American Academic examines the state of the higher education workforce in the United States. This report, which will be an annual report produced by AFT Higher Education, documents the troubling trend of relying more and more on contingent faculty in higher education who are underpaid and undersuported. The report documents that, within the ranks of full-time faculty, tenure-track positions continue to erode as a growing percentage of full-time faculty are also hired off the tenure track. The report also documents growth in the non-instructional workforce, particularly in the ranks of professional staff, which grew by 50 percent during this ten-year period. Readers can get even more detailed data on the workforce and much more for any institution of higher education in the country at the AFT Higher Education Data Center.
