Campus Equity Week 2007 Set for Oct. 29-Nov. 2

Campus Equity Week (CEW) is a national week of action to call attention to the unfair working conditions of part-time/adjunct faculty and other contingent faculty. CEW is a collection of local events locally conceived and is loosely coordinated by a national steering committee made up of activists and organizations including the AFT. For information about the national coalition, visit the Campus Equity Week home page.

AFT Materials for CEW 2007 focus on two themes.

  • The AFT is releasing a new statement on academic freedom this fall and in conjunction with that release will be sponsoring Academic Freedom Forums on campuses around the country to encourage discussions about how to ensure academic freedom rights for all faculty, whether full-time or part-time, tenured or not.
  • The AFT will also work with our affiliates to promote the AFT Faculty and College Excellence Campaign, which is a national campaign to promote fair and equitable treatment of contingent faculty as well as to establish a better balance between the number of full-time, tenured faculty and contingent faculty.

Posters are a great way to both announce events and raise awareness on campus. Download any of these posters to either announce an Academic Freedom Forum on your campus or create some "buzz" about FACE during Campus Equity Week.

If you are an AFT member and would like to customize the posters to include event dates and times, your own union logo, or additional text, visit the Working Families Toolkit. Registration is required.

FACE HearingHolding a FACE Hearing
Campus Equity Week is designed to call attention to the growing use and exploitation of contingent faculty. The FACE Campaign seeks to solve these issues and provides a great way build an event around both raising awareness of an important problem in higher education and discussion of solutions to that problem. This is a great opportunity to involve various members of the college or university, the community, and possibly members of your legislature. This document provides ideas about how to put together such an event.

FACE EditorialSample Editorial on FACE
A great way to raise awareness about Campus Equity Week and the Faculty and College Excellence campaign is to place an editorial in your local or campus paper during CEW. Consider modifying this piece as needed (contact the paper for length restrictions, etc.) and submit it for publication.

FACE DeclarationFACE Declaration
Another great way to educate the campus community is by submitting a resolution for consideration to your Faculty Senate (perhaps after passing it through your local union), or to other governing bodies on campus. This declaration provides a model for such a resolution. Another possibility would be to use the declaration as a petition that is circulated by faculty, students, and administrators.

FACE ButtonButtons
We also have a smaller amount of FACE buttons available that we will make available to AFT locals and state federations that are running a FACE Campaign event. Requests for these should be sent to Craig Smith at csmith@aft.org.
