International Exchange Opportunities for Teachers

The Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs supports a number of international exchange programs designed specifically for classroom teachers. These programs offer opportunities to expand professional horizons by observing and working with fellow teachers from other countries. We have listed three of the more well-known programs. The list is by no means exhaustive.

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Programs 

Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange —Teachers live and work in the host country for a semester or academic year. Participating countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

 Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program —This intensive professional development program offers teachers an opportunity go abroad for three to six months to study in an overseas research center or university, work within local schools in the host country, and to complete a capstone project. Participating countries: Argentina, Finland, India, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore and South Africa.

Teachers for Global Classrooms Program 

The Teachers for Global Classrooms Program consists of:

  • An online course designed specifically for U.S. teachers aiming to globalize their classrooms;
  • An international fellowship through a two- or three-week country visit upon successful completion of the online course; and
  • Two Global Education Symposiums in Washington, D.C.

Participating countries: Brazil, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco and Ukraine.
