Sexual Harassment

WHEREAS, sexual harassment is prohibited as a form of sex discrimination under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; and

WHEREAS, the AFT has previously resolved to fight sexual harassment in our schools and workplaces; and

WHEREAS, sexual harassment continues to be a problem that many union members face in schools and workplaces and for which union members request assistance:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers reaffirm its commitment to eliminate all forms of sexual harassment in schools, workplaces and union halls; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT update and develop new educational materials and workshops on sexual harassment and make them available to locals and members; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT continue working with the American Association of University Women, the National Women’s Law Center and other organizations to fight sexual harassment and promote the right of all students and workers to equitable and safe environments; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT seek and support legislation that increases the penalties attendant to this type of activity.
