A former high school teacher and college professor, Urbanski has been a national leader in education reform. As president of the Rochester (New York) Teachers Association, he proposed and designed an internship program for new teachers; a peer-review intervention plan; a career ladder; and a homework hotline for students. He was a trustee of the National Center for Education and the Economy and a senior associate to the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future. He has served on the advisory board of Harvard University’s National Center for Educational Leadership, on the policy working group at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, and on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Urbanski is director, Teacher Union Reform Network; member, executive session on “Making the System Work for Children in Poverty,” Kennedy School of Government; board of advisors, Education for Democracy/International; member, National Assessment Governing Board; and member, AFT Teachers program and policy council.
