AFT Vice President
David Hecker is president of AFT Michigan (AFL-CIO). He was elected president at the union's May 2001 convention and re-elected in May 2003 and 2005. Prior to being elected president, Hecker served as secretary-treasurer of the state federation.
Hecker was elected as an AFT Vice President at the national union's 2004 Convention. He serves on the AFT Teachers Program & Policy council as well as on the AFT's Advisory Committee on State Federations, AFT's Organizing, Health Care Annuity Trust and Constitution Amendment, convention committees and the No Child Left Behind Task Force.
Hecker also serves as Executive Vice President of the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO, and as a member of the Michigan State AFL-CIO Executive Council.
Hecker is active with various other organizations. He serves on the board of the Michigan Association for Children with Emotional Disorders and on the National Board of the Jewish Labor Committee for which he is Chair of the Michigan District. In addition, he is an officer of the Michigan Democratic Party and is a past president of the Metro Detroit chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Association.
Hecker has been a member of the AFT since 1977, and has served as President of AFT Local 3220, the union of graduate assistants at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently a member of AFT Local 1614. From 1986 to 1996, Hecker served as Executive Assistant to the President of the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO.
