Edward J. Doherty

VP Edward DohertyAFT Vice President
Edward Doherty serves as special assistant to the president of AFT Massachusetts. He began his career in 1967 as an English teacher at Boston Technical High School and served as secondary schools field representative from 1975 to 1979. In 1979 he became executive vice president of the BTU and was elected BTU president in 1983, serving in that capacity until 2004.

Doherty is active in many organizations. In addition to serving on the executive councils of the AFT and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, he also is a board member of the Massachusetts Partners for Public Education and a delegate for the Greater Boston Labor Council. Doherty is also a member of the BTU Committee on Political Education.

Doherty holds a doctorate in education from Harvard University and a Master of Education and Master of Arts from Boston State College. He earned his undergraduate degree at Boston College.
