AFT Vice President
Dr. Edward J. Doherty serves as special assistant to the president of the Massachusetts Federation of Teachers. Previously, Dr. Doherty was president of the Boston Teachers Union from 1983-2004, secondary field representative to the Boston Teachers Union from 1975-1979 and an English teacher at Boston Technical High School from 1967-1979.
Dr. Doherty is active in many activities and organizations. He is on the executive council of the American Federation on Teachers and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. He also participates as a board member for the Massachusetts Partners for Public Education and is a delegate for the Great Boston Labor Council. Dr. Doherty is a member of the Boston Teachers Union, Committee on Political Education and the Governing Board of the LAB at Brown University.
Doherty earned his Doctorate in Education from Harvard University in 1998. He attended Boston State College and the University of Massachusetts where he earned his Masters in Education and Masters in the Arts.
Mr. Doherty has been married for 35 years and has two daughters and one granddaughter.
