AFT Vice President
Michelle Bodden began her career as a teacher in 1984. She became active in the union at her school, and was elected the United Federation of Teachers in New York City chapter leader in 1988. Subsequently, Bodden came to work at the UFT full time, focusing on issues of school-based management and shared decision-making. In 1998, she was elected to the office of assistant treasurer, and in 2001 was voted as the assistant secretary of the UFT. In the fall of 2002, she was elected vice president of elementary schools. Her work spans a variety of areas, including innovative schools, work and family issues, charter schools and a strong focus on early childhood education. She is a member of the AFT civil and human rights committee, NYSUT elementary education committee, and the NYS Chapter of the AFT Black Caucus.
