The National Labor College (NLC) in Silver Spring, Md., was established as a training center by the AFL-CIO in 1969 to strengthen union member education and organizing skills. The NLC is the nation's only accredited higher education institution devoted exclusively to educating union leaders, members, activists and staff. The NLC became a degree-granting college in 1997 and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an independent, regional accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. NLC offers a bachelor of arts degree with majors in various areas of labor studies and a bachelor of technical/professional studies degree. Masters degree programs in public administration and legal and ethical studies are delivered by the University of Baltimore at the NLC campus. NLC also offers meeting rooms, overnight accommodations and dining facilities ideally suited for union conferences, workshops and staff retreats.
