DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The chief of staff is the key advisor to the president as well as the other AFT officers and union leaders. S/he will assist the president in planning, implementing and communicating the vision, mission and operations of the AFT. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Provides guidance and makes recommendations to the president on policy.
- Provides effective and regular on-going communication between and among the president and the elected officers and senior staff.
- Leads the planning and execution of monthly AFT staff meetings and management meetings as necessary.
- Manages the day-to-day operation of specific union functions and programs as delegated by the president.
- Manages senior level staff to ensure that the activities budgeted are focused on the goals and priorities of the union.
- Works closely with the general manager to ensure that the budget reflects the union’s goals and priorities.
- Knowledge of or ability to gain knowledge of the AFT, its structure and constituencies.
- Well-versed in a wide variety of subjects related to management and union administration including financial and legal obligations and collective bargaining.
- A general knowledge of relevant issues in public education, higher education, public/government service and health care are necessary and the individual must keep abreast of relevant legislative and policy issues specific to labor, education, health care, retirement and other issues affecting the AFT and its members.
- Understanding of the union environment and experience working with staff unions.
- Able to think critically with proven analytical skills and the capacity to synthesize complex information and make recommendations accordingly.
- Must be detail-oriented with strong written and oral communication skills.
- Able to manage numerous projects simultaneously and delegate as necessary.
- Must be collegial, able to maintain professionalism at all times, employ diplomacy and tact when needed, and must be able to anticipate and handle unexpected situations.
- Able to travel and work long, irregular hours in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in strategic planning.
- Specific knowledge of the American Federation of Teachers is a plus.
- Background in the labor movement and/or public service.
- Familiarity with membership organizations.
