DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the higher education department director and deputy director, the senior associate's duties will include gathering data from U.S. government and other relevant databases, conducting research on trends and issues related to higher education and the union movement and preparing drafts of AFT Higher Education reports, policy statements and newsletters. Responsibilities and duties include:

Work in cooperation with the editor of the annual AFT journal, American Academic, on coordination, submission and review of journal articles

Monitor board meetings and prepare the journal for publication

Compile and maintain a continuing repository of information on subjects such as employment trends, unionization and working conditions of higher education faculty and professional staff as well as professional and quality issues in the academy

Working with the other members of the department, the Senior Associate will be responsible for maintaining, as well as writing for AFT Higher Education's web sites and electronic newsletters to ensure that they are up-to-date and provide useful information and resources for AFT members.

Answer inquiries on higher education/union issues from AFT headquarters staff, field staff, affiliate leaders and members and the general public.

Attend and present information at various higher education and union conferences and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent writing skills and experience in conducting research on governmental and private higher education databases/reports.

Proven ability presenting complex information clearly in a variety of formats (from brief articles to substantial reports) and experience in editing a scholarly journal.

Knowledge of higher education institutional procedures, higher education unions and public policy issues.

Strong oral communications skills and poise in handling a wide variety of issues and persons.

Travel is required.

Prior experience working with a union or non-profit entity.

Experience with web site design and on-line organizing advocacy tools.

Experience on political or community organizing campaigns.
