DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The assistant director will work under the general direction of the department director and in cooperation with various AFT staff both inside and outside the department to examine, develop and communicate AFT policy regarding teacher quality and other important educational issues. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Produce a variety of written materials (e.g., reports, policy briefs, etc.) on programs related to AFT policies and initiatives on teacher quality, standards-based education and accountability.
  • Maintain the teacher quality sections of the AFT Web site.
  • Represent the AFT at professional meetings related to teacher quality issues and other issues as appropriate.
  • Serve as staff liaison to national professional teacher-related organizations such as the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
  • Create databases and collect, review and analyze data on teacher quality issues.
  • Make presentations to affiliates and other groups on AFT policy regarding teacher quality and other issues as appropriate.
  • Respond to affiliate requests on professional issues.
  • Promote the implementation of AFT's teacher quality policies and assist with the other initiatives or tasks supported by the educational issues department.

QUALIFICATONS

  • Experience in representing teachers at the local and/or state level on teacher quality issues and/or advanced degree in education, education administration/policy or public policy is highly desirable.
  • Proven research, writing and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary to make presentations on AFT policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of computer programs to write reports. and create and analyze databases.
  • Some travel is required.
  • Familiarity with unions or non-profit associations and/or AFT policy is highly desirable.
